All species seen throughout the South Island (and closely associated smaller islands) including 50 nautical miles from mainland (With the exceptions of a) the Cook Strait region where birds may only be counted to a halfway point between the South Island/D'Urville Island the North Island/Kapiti Island and b) Foveaux Strait where birds can be counted until halfway between South Island and Stewart Island--Here, Ruapuke Island counts as South Island. All Fiordland Islands are included.

Banks Peninsula Life List
Includes all birds seen from/on the Banks Peninsula (Cannot count from boats further than 1km offshore however Akaroa Harbour and other fiords can include boat-based sightings). Includes all areas east of Gebbies Pass Road, the southern half of Lyttelton (east of Gebbies Pass Rd north end), as well as areas east of SH 75 south of the junction with Gebbies Pass Rd). The Birdlings Flat village and immediately adjacent beach is included, along with all land to the east of here. *None of Lake Ellesmere is included.

Otago Peninsula Life List
Includes all birds seen from any part of the Otago Peninsula including at or less than 1km offshore in a boat. In Otago Harbour, can only count birds from the Peninsula-side (half). For the purposes of this list, the peninsula is considered to start from the outside at Lawyer's Head and from the inside from Anderson's Bay Inlet. Birds seen at or from Aramoana, Port Chalmers or other western areas are not countable for this list.

Catlins Life List
For the sake of this listing area, refer to this basic map. Key aspects to note is that the Catlins counting area includes Fortrose and the Mataura Estuary but does NOT include Waituna Lagoon. All of Catlins Forest Park(s) are included, as is Catlins Lake/Pounawaea, Nugget Point, and Kaka Point, however The Clutha River flats are NOT included. The northern boundary is well south of SH 93 & SH 1.
